A simplified linear optic flow-motion algorithm
نویسندگان
چکیده
The purpose of the article is to establish the relationship between rigid body motion and the optic flow image and solve motion parameters from optic flow image points. A basic equation relating optic flow image points to rigid body motion which involves only the instantaneous rotation and translation velocities without depths is established. A linear algorithm is developed to determine the mode of motion (whether the instantaneous translation is zero or not), the instantaneous rotation velocity, the direction of the instantaneous translation velocity, and the relative depth map (or surface structure) under the rank assumption. The algorithm represents a simplification to the linear optic flow-motion algorithm proposed in (Zhuang and Haralick, in Proceedings, IEEE First Conf. on Artificial Intelligence Applications, Denver, CO, 1984, pp. 366-375). 9 1988 Academic Press, Inc.

Linear Combinations of Optic Flow Vectors for Estimating Self-Motion - a Real-World Test of a Neural Model
The tangential neurons in the fly brain are sensitive to the typical optic flow patterns generated during self-motion. In this study, we examine whether a simplified linear model of these neurons can be used to estimate self-motion from the optic flow. We present a theory for the construction of an estimator consisting of a linear combination of optic flow vectors that incorporates prior knowle...
متن کاملOptic Flow Field Segmentation and Motion Estimation Using a Robust Genetic Partitioning Algorithm
Optic flow motion analysis represents an important family of visual information processing techniques in computer vision. Segmenting an optic flow field into coherent motion groups and estimating each underlyiiig motion is a very challenging task when the optic flow field is projected from a scene of several independently moving objects. The problem is further complicated if the optic flow data...
متن کاملEncoding of naturalistic optic flow by motion sensitive neurons of nucleus rotundus in the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata)
The retinal image changes that occur during locomotion, the optic flow, carry information about self-motion and the three-dimensional structure of the environment. Especially fast moving animals with only little binocular vision depend on these depth cues for maneuvering. They actively control their gaze to facilitate perception of depth based on cues in the optic flow. In the visual system of ...
متن کاملInsect-Inspired Self-Motion Estimation with Dense Flow Fields—An Adaptive Matched Filter Approach
The control of self-motion is a basic, but complex task for both technical and biological systems. Various algorithms have been proposed that allow the estimation of self-motion from the optic flow on the eyes. We show that two apparently very different approaches to solve this task, one technically and one biologically inspired, can be transformed into each other under certain conditions. One ...
متن کاملReceptive field dynamics underlying MST neuronal optic flow selectivity.
Optic flow informs moving observers about their heading direction. Neurons in monkey medial superior temporal (MST) cortex show heading selective responses to optic flow and planar direction selective responses to patches of local motion. We recorded MST neuronal responses to a 90 x 90 degrees optic flow display and to a 3 x 3 array of local motion patches covering the same area. Our goal was t...
